FISH RESEARCH: Dr. Park Delivers Seminar on Hudson River Fishes (July 14, 2012)

On July 14, 2012, Dr. Peter Park, director of the Nyack College Fishing Club, gave a lecture on "The Biodiversity of NY Fishes: What We Owe To The Hudson River." The talk was hosted by the Village of Nyack Library.

Abstract: The Hudson River is home to an immense array of fishes, many of which have great historical, commercial, recreational, and even aesthetic value. This lecture will introduce the diversity of fishes, highlighting some of the major fishes of the Hudson River ecosystem. Their biodiversity, ecology, and diversification will be discussed. I hope to answer the following questions (and more): Which fish species occur in the Hudson River around Nyack? How big is the biggest fish in the Hudson River? Why is this river so ecologically important?  What are some epic local fishing stories told by our locals? What can you do to learn more about our fishes? What can we do to protect them?

Speaker Bio: Dr. Peter J. Park, Assistant Professor of Biology at Nyack College, is an evolutionary ichthyologist who has expertise in ecological diversification of brain and behavior in Alaskan threespine stickleback fish.
